Classes
Lessons and practices are held in the Aquatic Fitness Center (AFC) Rooms 2 & 3. They are open to all dues-paying club members after the first two weeks of trial lessons. Membership dues ($90) are paid during the third week of lessons each semester. There is also the option of participating in Rent-a-Dancer to waive membership dues.
Students may enroll in any and all of the level-appropriate classes offered to them. We encourage everyone to attend practice each week.

Instructor: Lee Santos
Dances Covered: Waltz, Foxtrot, Tango, Swing, Cha Cha, Rumba, Hustle, Mambo
Social “Survivor” Lessons are intended for those with no previous ballroom dance experience or those who would like to brush up after a period of inactivity. Completing this semester course will teach you to dance nine common and popular dances so that you can “survive” an evening of social dancing at balls, weddings, and other formal events. Basic concepts such as the dance hold, leading, and following will be covered.
Bronze Standard and Latin

Location: AFC Rooms 2 & 3
Instructors: Lee Santos
Dances Covered: Waltz, Quickstep, Foxtrot, Tango, Viennese Waltz, Rumba, Cha Cha, Jive, Samba, Mambo, Bolero, Argentine Tango
These classes are intended for those who would like to become a more competent dancer. No previous experience is necessary. International Latin and Standard dances will be taught as a routine that will enable you to comfortably dance around a dance floor. Proper technique, footwork, timing will be emphasized. You do not have to take the Social class to enroll in this class. You can also just take the Standard section without having to take the Latin section, and vice versa.
Silver Standard and Latin

Location: AFC Rooms 2 & 3
Instructor: Lee Santos
Dances Covered: Waltz, Quickstep, Foxtrot, Tango, Viennese Waltz, Rumba, Cha Cha, Jive, East Coast Swing, Samba, Mambo, Bolero, Argentine Tango, West Coast Swing
This class is for students who have taken the Bronze class for at least two semesters, or have had comparable experience. The class will add silver syllabus steps to the bronze level dances and will emphasize technique and styling. This course is highly recommended for returning dancers who would like to continue and excel in competition.
Formation Team
Time: Thursday (Lessons) and Monday (Mandatory Practice)
Location: AFC Rooms 2 & 3
Instructor: Lee Santos
We will have several routines this semester. A formation team is comprised of 4-8 couples who perform a choreographed routine. You must be enrolled in either the Bronze or Silver class to join a formation team. UVa’s Formation Teams have competed at the National Collegiate Dancesport Championships and Triangle Invitational and performed in several USA Dance showcases, as well as our own club showcases. Anyone who expresses interest (even if they have never danced before!) is welcome to join the Formation Teams; however, most members do not begin performing until their second semester on the team. The Formation teams provide a great teambuilding atmosphere and are an excellent way to improve your dancing and get to know other club members.
Technique and General Practice
When:
Monday (Social/Bronze Review Led by the Team Captains)
Wednesday (Technique Practice with Angela Park)
Sunday (Technique Pracitice with Tyler Carbone and Claire Le Goues) alternating with
Sunday (Supervised Technique Lesson with Instructor Donna Barringer)
Location: AFC Rooms 2 & 3
Instructor: Donna Barringer Neighbors
Weeks with Supervised Technique Lessons: Sunday March 16, March 30 (tentative), April 13
The Sunday time will be open practice on non-technique lesson weeks, with technique advice from experienced club members.
In addition to general reviews and practices, Donna Barringer, our technique instructor, helps us improve our dancing beyond what can be learned in Tuesday and Wednesday lessons on several Sundays each semester. Dancers are also encouraged to seek their own practice space (you can view availabilities on the SOURCE). Many of the Multipurpose rooms in Slaughter and the AFC are not reserved during the afternoons and evenings, and dancers can use them for individual or couple practices. The Newcomb Ballroom is often open during the day and some evenings as well.
